hey man,
i think you really mostly need to think about doing lots of drills at this point. Work on your pole runs. There shouldnt be such an intentional pumping of the arms during the run... watch the greats like bubka and tarasov and you will see that their motion is all relaxed motion and every movement is efficient. Also, work on your rock back drills so that you learn how to finish a swing and how to break in the left arm on top to enable you to really get up the pole. good luck!

thanks for the reply! Yea the vaulter from clemson had me doing alot of rock backs practicing breaking my bottom arm and staying inverted...i was also working with a 5 foot pole laying on my back practicing the arm movements of getting verticle.

The first thing that needs to be addressed is the pole carry. You dont want to pump forward and back with your arms. VERY BAD FOR YOUR RUN!!!
do lots and lots of pole runs being relaxed with your arms. your tip shouldn't move very much (relative to your body).
okay so the jump.
i personally believe that this is too much left arm for that small of a grip on those poles. You should emphasize being more passive with your left arm and more aggressive with your chest drive. the best way to learn that..... STRAIGHT POLE VAULTS!!! do lots of 3-4 left vaults with no bend in the pole, learning how to jump up and lead with the chest!!
these straight pole vaults take us to point number 3, which is fixing the swing. the first reason you cant swing is because the left arm is straight way to long!!! if you read altius and agapits posts you know that the left arm should not be pushing (especially not that late in the jump). work on swinging with a straight pole and after you have mastered that, then slowly incorporate bigger and bigger bends!!
good luck

givaulter,
still, as brian and i both suggested earlier, you need need need to work those pole runs and learn to run more efficiently with the pole. The pole pump needs to go!! also, i agree with brian that the drills are going to be the best thing for you right now, and a passive left arm, with a good penetrating chest leading through the takeoff will help you a lot. work those 3-4 step straight pole drills!!! good luck man.

The guys are absolutely correct! The way to change your pole carry is to get both elbows down at your side, not up and out! Don't put your finger around the pole. Rather, rest the pole in the crouch of your hand between the thumb and forefinger. Yes keep the hand opened.....

ooh... not sure how I feel about the open hand carry... I personally believe that the closed hand squares the shoulders and allows for the pole's weight distribution to be correctly maintained but there have certainly been athletes with success using the open hand. anyways, I know that there are lots of opinions concerning the top hand during the pole run, which can be seen in one of the technique forums.

thanks for the help! I keep my index finger and my thumb on the pole on my run... I'm still working on the arm movements at practice...we have league championships tomarrow i want to get over 12'3 or 12'6...However my coach from clemson is saying that i need to find a 14'6 175 because my pole right now(13'7 171.6) is to soft and im not getting the response out of it that i should be...gotta ask around for sectionals next week...
