1st jumps on BIGGER POLE!

Unread postby EPVaulter1 » Mon May 07, 2007 9:58 pm

Well i was on a 130lb pole and two days ago i was working on using a soft 150 and did fairly well (i use it in the 1st video)
When i got to the meet i did all my warm-up jumps with it.... right before we were about to start my coach showed up with a pole for me to try (i believe it is a 13'6" 150lb Rocket)... so i used it and ended up really close to clearing 13'4"

10'6"

11'6" - 1st jump with Rocket

12'6" - 2nd jump with Rocket

13'4" - Miss

I am still improving and i know i am doing a few things wrong

Let me know what you think!

keep the swing comming, and dont keep the bottom arm on it too long. your bottom arm should be out at take off, and when your swing comes through, you need to let your bottom arm collapse, letting your hips to rise
PR- 15-1
Great season, time to top it

I think you are hesitating on that new pole a little bit. You need more agression throughout your jump. Your take off isnt as powerful as it should be for the pole you are on, and your swing stops when your shins hit the pole, as it seems your eyes are fixated on the bar. You need to keep your energy moving into the pole during the entire jump, by jumping hard, swinging fast to the pole, and moving your hips up the pole. You are not once inverted in your videos, but thats ok. Hit the bubkas hard and do tons of leg lifts on the ground and on a high bar. It will take ab strength to keep the pole moving the entire jump. I think if can swing all the way back and move up the pole you will PR by a foot right away.
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

I'm having trouble with keeping my plant leg back and getting a good swing out of it, especially as i progress to stiffer poles... any ideas?
Also i noticed that i am extending both legs too soon which making me flag out and keeps me from getting inverted... again, especially as i progress to stiffer poles.. any ideas?
I have districts on friday & want to make states REALLY badly!
(especially since my football and wrestling season both ended in injury... i really need a chance to redeem myself)

I know what you mean. I'm going to be working twice as hard to make states next year.

It looks like you're jamming your bottom arm out and then down as you swing which will cause you to block out and bring your swing to a stop before you finish.

Work on keeping your hands above your head and swinging your hips, not your feet, to meet them. That pole looks like it will work well for you. Good luck!
