This. You either need to drop your grip and not worry about the pole bending, get a smaller pole, or use a longer run.

There's usually an "awkward" stage in between flexible and stiff vaulting, and you seem to have hit it right on the head. I would suggest going back to a longer run, and eventually raising your grip. A little more grip is going to make the pole more smooth in it's bend and allow you to swing on it without fighting a recoil before you even reach the chord. go from 5 steps, raise your grip 2 inches at a time and see how the pole responds. But be safe, only change one thing at a time, so the run first, then the grip.
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

So I was doing running plants today, and I figured I'd finally bring up something that I've never asked but always sort of pondered about in the back of my head...

You see, my left arm typically exerts quite a bit of downward force just after I jump... Is this normal/good? Or is it a poor habit...?

Are you clear on what I mean?

No, not 100%...Were you doing pole runs or actually vaulting? As far as the downward force, I am assuming this is after your takeoff is complete? If not then of course it is bad.... If it occurs after the takeoff is complete then that would match Roman's Manifesto. Message me and I will show you something both interesting and confusing ;)

On the track, not actually vaulting... it's after I leave the ground... I think it comes from a forward lean...?

FYI: My legs are completely healed of any and all ailments. It's a miracle.

Have had two meets (one Tuesday, one today), both were 11' then XXX at 11'7"... The Tuesday meet had awful weather (cold, rainy, windy). Today's meet I was blowing through on an almost dangerous level... Reached the very back of the pit on a 13' 160 from 6, then also from 5, then it was a little stiffer than I expected from 4 so I half-bailed.

Had a very good practice Thursday though... Gripped 12'10"-ish from 3 (good tail-wind, so that's not all me), was getting my feet up and over 14' and even 14'6" bungies.

Film will be up later today or tomorrow.

So what is the next pole you have available after the 13'160?

That's a bit of a jump to the 14'155, but it should be plenty doable if you can grip 12'10 from 3 lefts and land deep in the pit on the 13'160. Just don't jack your grip up, start out with a 13' grip. You have a tendency to not land deep enough.

Also a 13'6" 160! Forgot to put that on the list!!! That will of course be the next pole.

Here's video of that practice I was telling you about... The first bungie is definitely 14', the next one is either 14' or 14'6", I'm not sure. 13' 145 Skypole. Grip ~ 12'10"

Came in at 8' just to get on the board. Skip to 10'. Win. 11'7", first attempt clearance and PR. 12', miss, miss, clearance. My coach wouldn't let me go higher.

Video up soon.
