Also check out my 'database' thread... You might find some interesting thoughts on certain drills!

6P, I would like to see you in action on the highbar. Please show us some of the drills that you do.

I would like to see things like "Kip Cast Free Hip" like you can see here: http://www.polevaultpower.com/media/video/skillsanddrills/
... or anything else that your regularly do on the highbar.

But don't even try the Giants or Back Uprise to Free Hip shown on that PVP page unless you have good mats, grips, and a "strap bar".

Also, try this one on the highbar - like "Amy" does on the rings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gn5LIiHmPlY&feature=related

:D Try to get the same backswing, downswing, and upswing like Amy does! Ha! Ha! :D

Seriously, if you haven't already discovered this, I think you can get a better feeling for how to swing/extend on the pole by practising it on the highbar.

And I saw in your vid that you have a highbar there. Just ask your coach to please don't film thru the trees! :)

If I had a highbar right next to my runway, I'd use it for warmups! Do you do that?

Oh ... one more thing ... Try to film your highbar tricks BEFORE the sun goes down! :)

YES!

Oh and KB... You'll be happy to know that I am going to be building a highbar in my backyard very soon!

damn, i didn't get this post til i came back )= i work at a gymnastics center, so i do drills like these already. i'll get some footage of them and post them as soon as possible

and oh, kirk!! does it matter whether i use high bar or rings?? i always felt that rings was easier and also, i always hit my shins when on a high bar, but i'll do the drills there anyway, if you feel it's best. you said high bar, but i'm just making sure {nods} -6P

They are both good. Rings are easier. You can do a bigger variety of exercises on the high bar. Learn how to dod bubkas right and you won't hit your shins.

6P, I suggested highbar rather than rings for a couple reasons ...

1. I saw a highbar at the end of your runway in your vids, so I know that it's readily available for you to use.

2. You can't do a "Kip Cast Free Hip" on rings. That's quite a key drill for what we're discussing re your vault vids right now. If we can see how well you do those, then we can critique your vault better. Actually, even just critiqueing your highbar and rings work will help you too.

If you also have rings, then definitely train on them too, and go ahead and film your tricks on them. But besides not being able to do a Free Hip on them, I find that the unintentional swinging of the rings is a nuisance, and I also like the bounce that a highbar gives you - it feels like the coil/recoil of the pole, is "smoother" on the shoulders (less strain), and gives you a better sense of timing your shoot-to-a-handstand than on the rings ... sorry for the run-on sentence! :)

I would also like to hear more about the drill that hurts your shins. Please explain, and please video. I had similar problems, but I don't know if we're talking about the same drill. I'll have some advice on this, once I see/hear what you're talking about.

For sure, please do the "Amy drill" on the rings, and film that!

He's probably doing bubkas wrong. Either that or windshield wipers.

Yes, I've found that beginners (like myself) sometimes try to 'cheat' a little bit while doing Bubkas and drift underneath the bar too far (because it is easier to hold), which results in a pretty painful result if one tries to extend up INTO a solid bar...
