Andy Kim's Senior Season Log

Unread postby andy94566 » Sun Feb 26, 2012 5:18 pm

I think instead making new threads every time I vault, I'll just have this log to record my practices and meets. My first videos from the first 2 weeks of season can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=23133

A little about myself, I am 18 years old, a senior, and attend Amador Valley High School in CA. My PR is 12' 2" and I hope to be clearing 14' 3.25" this year and depending on how things go by midseason possibly 15' :D I have been vaulting since sophomore year and fell in love with this amazing sport. My sophomore year, I cleared 10' and my junior year is when I cleared 12' 2". I hope to continue vaulting at a D3 college either in Occidental or Emory University and maybe UCSD (D2) depending on how this year goes.

Yesterday was a time trials meet, and I came in with lofty goals of PR'ing my first meet back at 12' 6". Unfortunately, I was only able to clear 11'6"... :crying:

Any and all critisms all greatly appreciated!!!

My vaults felt great and my first attempt at 12' was actually very good and I felt way over the bar but my standards were too far back.
Here are some videos from yesterday's meet:

(all vaults are from 6 left approach)

1st jump:
Bar: 11'
Pole: 14' 155 holding about 14" down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUsoepv35Ak

2nd jump:
Bar: 11' 6" (1st attempt- miss)
Pole: 14' 155 holding about 14" down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3_r2BdoIAU

3rd jump:
Bar: 11'6" (2nd attempt- make)
Pole: 14' 155 holding about 14" down
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xK9csqmMWv8

4th jump:
Bar 12' (1st attempt- miss- it was my best attempt that morning)
Pole: 14' 160 holding about 14" down

First meet of the season

All jumps are on a 14' 160 UCS pole holding 14 inches down. Running 6 lefts from 75'6" with standards at 20-22 inches. I ended up having to drop out after clearing 11'6" because I landed in the box at my 2nd attempt at 12'. If anyone can tell me the reason why I am landing so shallow please help me.

11': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0I5eLzAg ... e=youtu.be
11'6" 1st attempt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gShUwWh ... e=youtu.be
11'6" 3rd attempt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekEkoi7L ... e=youtu.be
12' 1st attempt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PP88M3Tx ... e=youtu.be
12' 2nd attempt (land in the box): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qV1XOT6- ... e=youtu.be

I would really appreciate any comments especially on the shallow landings. For now, I am moving down to a smaller pole and my coach and I are focusing on running tall, planting tall and early, and jumping tall.

I would also grip down if I were you. Once you start having smoother jumps and landing deeper in the pit, then I would go back up a pole or up a grip.

So it's been a long week trying to fix alot of my errors and most importantly what's causing me to land so shallow every time. Before, I was running "squatted" low to the ground, and had a short plant, didn't try to jump up at take off and had a horrible position at take off. During practice for the last week, the run and the plant is all that I worked on. When I fell into the box at the competition, I was on a 14' 160 pole holding 14" down so during practice, I went on a 14' 150 pole holding 12" down and working on staying tall, jumping up, and just holding the take off position all the way through trying to land as deep as possible. Here is a video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUgKfVT6 ... e=youtu.be

Yesterday at the competition, I started on the 14' 150 pole, and blew through. In fact, in this meet, instead of landing on the box, I almost landed off the back of the pit so I moved up to a 14' 155 pole and I blew through, knocking the bar off on the way up with my standards all the way back at 80cm. So I went onto the 14' 160 pole and had some of the best jumps I've ever had. I believe what helped me was focusing on staying tall throughout the whole vault, tall torso during the run, high knees, tall hands during plant, jumping up, hands up during plant, etc. Videos of that meet coming soon.

3/10/12 Dan Gabor Invitational

Came in at 11' with a 14' 155 UCS pole holding 6 inches down. Blew through and moved up to the 14' 160 UCS pole holding 6 inches down. This bigger pole was the same pole that I landed in the box with just one week ago but after working on my plant and run (focusing on staying tall), I managed to land deeper into the pit.

1st jump: 11' (3rd attempt- my 6 left mark is at 75 feet, but for some reason I started from 85 feet and had to force an akward 7th left step. I didn't realize I was doing this and essentially 10 feet out until my third attempt but I forced myself to do it on this attempt. Pole is a 14' 155 UCS)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-2w8K1s ... e=youtu.be

2nd jump: 12' (2nd attempt, 6 left approach from 75 feet with 14' 160 UCS pole, standard at 75cm)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKjgnorm ... e=youtu.be

3rd and 4th jumps: 12' 6" (1st and 3rd attempts, 6 left approach from 75 feet with 14' 160 UCS pole holding 6 inches down, standards at 75 cm and 70cm, I should have moved it up to 60cm!!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSQSFeQh ... e=youtu.be

This week, there is a meet on Thursday and I plan to move back to a 7 left approach, starting with the same 14' 160 pole. My coach ordered me a 14' 6" 165 pole that came in just last week. We also have a 15' 150 and 15' 155 pole. If I need to move up from the 14' 160 pole, which pole should I move up to? My 14' 160 pole is essentially the same skyjumpers pole rating as the 15' 150 pole.

Thank you.

I think you need to study the chart closer... http://www.skyjumpers.com/articles/pvpr ... table.html

It looks to me like you slow down on the last few strides when you start your plant

Videos from last Thursday's meet where I got 13'. Sorry for the horrible angles of the videos. I'll ask to get better angles next time. The heights go as follows: 11', 11'6", 12', 12'6", 13' all cleared at first attempts, and 3 attempts at 13'4".

Pole is a 14' 160 UCS pole holding 8 inches down with an approach run of 6 lefts from 75 feet.
