It's a push with the TOP arm ... not with the bottom arm. I call it "PRESS and SQUEEZE", so as not to use the ambiguous word "push". By PRESS, I mean stretching the top arm as high as you can on takeoff ... and then continuing to stretch it as much as you can. Exactly what you said re "planting tall and good form". To SQUEEZE means to grip tight with the top hand ... so the pole doesn't slip out of your hands. You might want to search for "press squeeze" to find other threads where I've discussed this.

Your top elbow should not bend. The opposite of PRESS is PULL. If you PULL with your top arm, you're going to hunch your top shoulder ... and raise your center of mass. These 2 faults will reduce your pole speed towards vertical. By pressing, you keep your CoM as low as you possibly can, whilst minimizing any loss of energy due to pulling with your top arm. This keeps the pole rotating to vertical.

I hope you're catching these terms ... I'm sure they're new to you. You can search for them on PVP to get a more thorough explanation. For example, search for "rotate pole vertical".

Ok thanks kirk. That makes sense now. Ill do some searching on that also. I only went 10 at the meet today. For some reason i wasnt getting depth again. And i think my plant was dead on I must not of been driving very well. But I have a nice full week of practice before a meet so Im hoping my depth gets consistent. Because my height has been great lately but I am starting to get sick of going a 1 ft over the bar and coming down on it!

A foot over and landing on the bar is still a miss.

While we are on the subject...

I looked at all of your utube vaults again. I wouldn't characterize any of these vaults as a blow through. Your practice standards look very shallow to my eye. In fact, where you are generally landing makes me nervous.

Push your standards back to 80 cm (30.5 inches), further if possible for practice. When your standards are back, you will have room to swing long. Close standards encourage you to pull the legs and stop moving the pole to vertical.

Reread the advice from Kirk and others (by the way, squeezing the top hand is good, I like that). And rewatch Butler at Reno... look at the progression he teaches his vaulters.

In the spirit of tag-team coaching, Barefoot's advice is all good. :yes:

The only thing I have to add is that if you set your standards at 80, you're actually at 31.5". ;)

ok guys thanks...tommorow at practice im going to get some more video and lower my grip and push the standards back...ill work on the press and squeeze too! thanks

ok guys ive been working on everything you have said and have improved alot. I just vaulted 11-6 at our county meet and looking to get 12 at districts to advance to regionals. Thanks to eveyrone who helped me!
