please help...need to PR!

Unread postby sivaulter » Fri Apr 11, 2008 12:08 am

Hi,
I'm a junior vaulting on a 13'7" 145 in these vaults at a recent meet.
I weigh about 120 lb. and I'm 5'5''. I desperately want to PR after not doing so for about a year. It seems that my meet jumping is pretty bad compared to my practice jumps. Anyways, I was hoping for some advice. I just got rid of my shin splints and should be moving up to 14 140's pretty soon. My feeling is that I am not driving enough due to my left arm, and that is messing up my timing and my swing. Help would be greatly appreciated.

The progression is 11'6, 12, 12'6

One thing you may want to do in the future is film from the side and not the back, it makes your run harder to see and some of the problems harder to diagnose. It looks like you are taking off under from what I can see of the position of your bottom arm, its still quite bent. The other thing that I can see is that your trail leg is bent. Work toward having a proper take off position (i.e. take off leg/toe being directly under your top hand) and that will allow you to swing with a straight trail leg. On your attempt at 12 it appears as if you are bailing out of the jump and trying to turn a little early. Make sure that when you swing you swing all the way up to your top hand. The same thing happens on your second attempt at 12, on your third attempt you swing all the way up and you have decent clearance. Hope that helps, vault high, vault safe, have fun
What is nice about this sport is that I am responsible for most everything.

Flying away too soon?

It looks to me like you are getting too much seperation between yourself and the pole during the pull turn. You may be just drifting off the pole or trying to fly away too soon.
