Agapit,
I would like a little further explanation on the pull if you could. As I watch Bubka's 6.11 vault on stabhoch it appears his left arm extends (some might say push, I won't sin and say that but I can see where some may think this) shortly after take off and then after this extention his bicep begins the pull. Would you mind possible giving a brief or not so brief commentary on the picture series I have linked below and describe each phase and what is happening in relation to an immeadiate pull.

Take off

Slide 2

His arm appears clearly bent and is certainly not pushing.

Slide 3

Here his arm has extended this is where I have difficultly understanding how he is still pulling. Certainly his lats may be pulling here but why has his arm extended near straight? (My guess is this is what is misleading many people)

And here I can see a clear pull with the bicep.[/img]

Did you know that bamboo bent between 1 foot to 1 foot 8 inches with some vaulters? Did you also know that they did not push bamboo poles?

So what do you think about bamboo example?

I had an interesting conversation with Dick Ganslen some years ago. He was a 14’ + vaulter back in the bamboo era, and the author of “The Mechanics of the Pole Vault.â€Â

I will offer my opinion that he is simply accommodating the bend of the pole with his left arm. You can in fact be pulling when your arm is straight. Isn't that the extreme position when you do a pull up on a horizontal bar?

His body is swinging from his top arm and as his body changes position in space and relative to the changing position of the pole, his left arm/hand remains in contact with the pole. I am not able to look at a photograph and tell if the arm is pulling or not, but I do believe it could be.

"I love it" said Gandalf the White: "You fools". In this picture he is off the ground and I belive the pole is still straight, left arm bent and elbow is facing almost 90 degrees to the pole. I suggest you try to push pole in this position. And by the way, how do you push the pole when you are off the ground? LOL.

Which direction do you think he is pushing the pole? Is it up above his head? LOL. Perhaps he is rowing? Or no! The next slide does not support the rowing hypothesis.

P.S. I love to see Vasily is still young in the frame watching the take-off

The straightening of the arm happens due to the increase of the bend of the pole. The pole is bending (moving away from his chest) much faster than inversion can catch it.

It is simple aberration. Our senses are easy to fool. It is hard to imagine that E=mc2 and it does not make sense that the time slows when objects are approaching speed of light, unless of course you draw thousands and thousands of formulas preceding these answers.

Some forces are shortening the swing (bringing hips to the left arm grip). I wonder what is the leading force(s) through which one could achieve this desired result in this position.

a. Right arm (pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi and smaller muscles)
b. Left arm pull
c. All of the above
d. All of the above with leading contribution from the left arm pull

P.S. Is pole still bending? Does the distance between the chest and the pole still increasing?

To clean your sin you should watch the video (not the pictures) of the prophet 30 times in a row (No pun intended). Watch it in the real speed and focus ONLY on the left arm. Go and don’t sin.

back then

there's the old tribal method . . word of mouth. You know father to son. then there's the old browning things I think they were called cameras back then. Of course in the 60s the 8 track came on the scene and then the super 8 made it's presence known. But the bamboo pole was retired around the late 50's and early 60's at the LATEST. I used one in 61 for a short while....

I bet you some kids in China still use it.

We used to go to a furniture factory that dried them. I think, I used bamboo until I cleared 10' into the sand pit. I was very young at the time. It was a good experience. I can see it now.

Now, people already used fiberglass for many years, our club just did not have it available for little punks like us.

What a touching story. :crying:

P.S. I am not as old as you are Coach Job. LOL.

That's true agapit you are not as OLD as I am!!!! But we used to go to the carpet companies to get bamboo poles. They used to ship carpets wrapped around bamboo with a couple of feet out on each end to pick move them from place to place.
