When I went to camp i seen a guy do a backflip off his pole. It looked awsome. I can do a front flip and clear low heights like 9 feet but i can't land on my feet. Can anyone here do a back flip off your pole? It seems like it would scary to do a back flip. What other tricks can you do while pole vaulting or have seen someone do, that are not dangerous? Can anyone clear more than 9 feet doing a front flip over the bar? What do you think about doing flips, is it a stupied idea?

I can do 2-3 step back flips but I can't do them clean like the guys from granite bay up here. I can almost get a backflip off my pole on a full vault if i get on my 15' pole. You just go up and after you turn over and explode off the top, you tuck your legs. I think Toby does it in Neovault

Front flips are easy, all u do is rock back half way and wait for your pole to unbend then learn as far forward as you can and let go or your pole. Does anyone know of a website where you could see a video of someone doing a flip? There is one video at Vaultword when u click on high school vaulters it shows someone do a front flip. I still dont understand how to do a backflip. Do u turn around and flip?

As far as I understand, a backflip off of the pole is just really the continuation of a really quick rock back. If you've ever done a rock back and you're seeing the runway behind you when you're upside down, then what you have to do is make sure that when you go, you're doing a really quick rockback that is rotating pretty fast and continue it. If you're rockback is like this, the only thing stopping you from continuing to rotate would be the pole. So for a flip, you do the rock back, and then once you are all the way rocked back, you let go of the pole and continue to rotate. JUst be careful not to let go early. (I've done that a few times

I don't recommend anyone trying flips off the pole - if you don't know what you're doing and don't have good air awareness, you can get really hurt.
With that being said, I can do gainers/backflips off of a straight pole pop-up, but you don't want to do that on a bent pole, because you would have to let go of the pole in mid-bend, and that could be ugly in a lot of ways.
As for a true back somersault off the top, buy Neovault and watch Toby Stevenson do it. It's just a continuation of the fly-away off the top into a tight tuck, but you'd have to be on a long enough pole to have enough time to rotate all the way onto your back.
As for front flips, they're done by taking off and loading a bending pole, but not allowing yourself to swing, and when the pole opens up, you drive your trail leg backwards, let go with the top hand, tuck your chin to chest, and rotate around to land on your back. Almost seen several people do piledrivers into the box with that stunt.
If you want to be a good pole vaulter, forget about doing flips and learn how to run, plant, and hit the pocket.

how do you guys know how to do a front flip and not a back flip?? i think back flips are alot easier. i can do front flips by going off the wrong side of the pole, and kinda flip over the pole, i got 10 feet doin that once. back flips are so easy, just get a good sweep on your plant, and when you go vertical, just keep going. i can never clear a bar doing a back flip though, cause its hard to throw your pole back.

Those little straight pole rockback drills from a few steps that most people do before they actually vault.
