Plant and swing

Unread postby Scouse Sergei » Sat Oct 27, 2007 1:16 pm

Hi,
I am a pole vault coach in Liverpool, UK but I need some help desperately! I have 2 vaulters approaching 4m but they have very little swing technique or invert whatsoever. Can anybody advise on what drills to use to swing the legs up and reach vertical besides rope work? I teach them to have a high drive knee and straight trail leg on plant but the swing just isn't developing. I haven't read any books or watched any videos so I'm not familair with Petrov et al. Is there a particular book I should buy? Should I encourage my vaulters to jump at the point of plant? Thanks people.

"Beginner to Bubka" is an excellent book. It is written as 'how to coach' the vault and it does address the swing as a critical element to getting inverted. It is currently in the final stages of re-writing for the second edition.

The book's author is active on this site. He goes by the name 'Altius'. Since you are located in the UK, you might find it interesting to know he was educated in the UK but has lived in Australia for many years.

Since I notice this is your first post, be sure to learn how to use the Search function on this site. There is an amazing amount of information available and most topics have been covered at least once.

Thanks for the reply, very useful. Would really appeciate it if somebody could suggest some drills/exercisies for the Petrov style swing. It may take a while for the book to come! I have no high bar and no decent rope to use for practice so would welcome some advice on sand pit or normal vaulting routines. Cheers guys....
Mark from Liverpool, UK.

For starters, look in the red bar at the top of the page and click on 'Media'. Then click on 'Video - skills and drills'. Then check out any or all of the videos, in particular the first 3. I know you said you don't have a high bar but maybe you have a piece of broken pole that you can hang with a rope running through its length to create a makeshift highbar.

This site has some video of drills, as well as some discussion on many other topics. http://pvei.com/fusion/articles.php?cat_id=15
