Magic Number System

Unread postby ultravault » Wed Dec 22, 2010 11:33 pm

I realize that many people dont agree with the magic number system, but I was just wondering what the exact "equation" for it is. (how far you move back every time you hand grip goes up, ect.) I used it over the summer and it was easy and worked well for me. I looked all over for something on it and couldnt find anything. Can someone help me?

Do you mean how many Feet you move back per grip or how many lefts? Because the actual number in feet depends on what your hand grip is currently. Also are you referring to the Mid Mark Chart that tells you the numbers fro your last 3 lefts? There is also a chart somewhere that says how many inches to go up per left. I think it is something like 6 inches from 3-4 lefts, 4 inches from 4-5 lefts, 3 inches from 5-6 lefts, 2 inches from 6-7 and 1 from 7-8 (do not quote me on that one but it is something around those numbers, but that one depends on the athlete a lot).

The Mid Mark chart can be found at.

I think he's talking about what they do at Bell Athletics.

I _think_ this is how it's done, someone correct me if I am wrong...

Put the pole in the box and grip where you normally grip from a long run, stand at the appropriate takeoff point.
Turn around.
Run back (not planting the pole) and have someone catch your 5th left (10th step) but you run full speed through it.
Divide that number by 5 for your magic number.
Your magic number can be used to estimate where you should start on short runs and how far to back up when you back up a stride.

For example...
A beginning vaulter's step is caught at 50'. Their magic number is 10'. For a 3 left run, they should start at about 30'. Say they take 6 jumps from this run and end up needing to be at 31'. When it is time to back up, they should back up 10' from there to 41'. But say they took 6 jumps from 30' and ended up needing to be at 29', they should then back up to 39'.

It works great for camps and such where you're working with a bunch of kids who are clueless and you don't know much about them. It's not precise, but it will usually get you close enough that they can vault safely.
