But if Wile E. hits the sign, then his arms and legs are relaxed ... or at least powerless to resist ... and it's just pure natural momentum that causes them to continue forward. THAT'S NOT QUITE IT!

I think you got it! :yes: In a "natural swing" ... at least MY definition of one ... the vaulter should not interfere with the "natural" pendulum action of the top hand and arm, so that his body swings "naturally". For example, anything you do with the bottom arm that alters the "natural" path of that swing would not be "natural".

So far, so good ... but this definition does NOT preclude the possibility of ACCELERATING the swing with a powerful downswing ... with a powerful whipping action. And remember that the downswing includes top arm action as well as trail leg action. This arm and leg action does NOT make the swing "unnatural".
