Ok, so I have this problem...After you get inverted and right before you turn do you pole yourself up then push while you are turning?
Currently I am getting 8'6" and can get inverted but I don't know if I should be pulling then pushing...It's the start of my second season as a vaulter.
Question on the swing up

Re: Question on the swing up
Neither...
Forget about getting upside down, or 'inverted', and start worrying about swinging long and hard with a straight trail leg! That's what will get you over 9', 9'6", and 13'+, NOT a strong pull-turn or push-off.
Once your to the point where you're extending your hips 'through' your hands, then you can pull/turn then push... That'll get you a few extra inches LATER... For now, pulling and pushing are shortcuts that might help you survive in a meet, but will hinder your development overall.

Re: Question on the swing up
Think about keeping pressure on the pole as long as you can. Once you are inverted, you need to keep your hips moving up the entire time. Now you are asking whether you turn, and then keep pushing? The answer is yes, but you want to keep from turning until the VERY last moment you are on the pole. This will allow you to keep the pressure on the pole for the longest amount of time. The turn happens automatically if you think about keeping pressure on the pole.
The greater the challenge, the more glorious the triumph

Re: Question on the swing up
Instead of swinging and pulling, try swinging then redirecting the swing more UPwards with your hips... Get your feet AND hips up over your head, shoot them up, and you'll be suprised.
For now, NO PULLING.
For now, NO PULLING.

Re: Question on the swing up
Without a video it's really hard to help with any aspect of a jump without seeing what you do from the top of the runway to landing on your back on the pit. Always remember that the first thing that happens in pole vaulting is the first step down the runway. Usually a trouble spot is a direct result of an event or two just before it. Granted, getting on a pole and knowing what to do once you're off the ground is important, but by your asking about "pulling and pushing" shows me that you're new to the event and don't have a real good grasp of all of the links in the chain of events that occur in a successful vault. The good news is that you have come to the right place and that's POLEVAULTPOWER.com. Up in the right hand corner of each page is a search button. While you are focusing on your particular "focus point" in your jump (like this thread is) also search for threads that deal with pole carry, plant, take off, steps, trail leg swing, the turn and many more useful threads. Once you understand each portion of the event you will become a better vaulter just through understanding. It's a little late for this season but I would really like to see you get Altius's "Beginner to Bubka and Isinbyeva too" video and the "Beginner to Bubka II" book. They are absolutely invaluable to both vaulters and coaches. Also read up on this forum everything you can about DJ's mid mark chart . Understand it and use it. It works. Apparently you don't have a coach or are being coached by someone who has a limited amount of knowledge of the sport. As this puts you at a disadvantage it's not the end of the world. With BTB2, the mid mark chart and study here on the forum, and then diligence in putting that knowledge to work on the runway you'll be surprised at how much better you'll jump as you learn and put each piece of the puzzle together in a continuous chain of events. Get a video posted so we can see what you need to "spot up" on to get you through this season. Then get the books, the video and the mid mark chart and live with those buggers from now until next season. Good Luck and ....................Later...............Mike
