Hmmm...I want to see footage of your next practice. I think that's the only way ANYBODY here will be able to find a definitive answer to your "problem". Honestly, it sounds to me like you're taking off, too far out, and your mass is coming down before the pole has a chance to rise and you're, in a sense, jumping 'onto' the pole, as seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw2kgmNuUaI To me, it sounds like THIS is what you're doing. Then only reason that this is probably NOT it, is because you claimed to already be taking off, under. And if you were taking off so far under, and moved your run back, only a foot, then you probably should be THAT FAR out. Do you know what your mid-mark is??? (haha, never thought i'd ask that question)

When i started really experimenting with free take-off's and pre-jumps, this was the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oS4mbUm6XBA NOW, my main problem was that i was dropping my drive-knee, after take-off. Do you do that?? haha.

As you can start to see, all these different variables, that i think most vaulters don't even realize they're doing, make it very hard to diagnose, without video. So...please get some footage of you're next practice. I think it would greatly speed things up and stop this "guessing game". -6P

Welcome back 6P!

I actually never thought about taking off too far out. That is a good hypothesis as well.

You're not dropping your shoulders back; all i'm sayin haha

No really, try doing some drills, like i do, on the rope, where i get into the...the...what the hell do i call it?? i can't call it 'L' or 'V', those are bad haha. damn, here, just watch haha: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ea4QReXthg

Pay Attention to the:
1. Bubka's on Rings
2. Extensions on Rope (more of a strength exercise)
3. Bubka's on High Bar (the reason why i do these, to begin with)

Notice how my shoulders 'drop back'. that's what you USED TO do and DON'T DO ANYMORE. Let me know if you have any questions. -6P

Yeah, but maintain speed as well. One really nice drill I use with my athletes, is hurdles spaced at about 13-15 feet (size 10.5 :) ). 3-5 hurdles depending on skill. In order to complete them, speed must be maintained at take-off. This youtube shows the high jump version of the drill. The long jump/pole vault version would use lower hurdles and spaced further apart.

You'll quickly realize, that if you are unable to take-off AND maintain speed, you'll loose momentum and have to end the drill prematurely.

So, in order to clarify Rick: In order to jump higher, more force must be added to push the pole towards vertical.

..nice youtube video from La Crosse (LaX) Wisconsin  I am pretty sure I know that guy actually (my screen res wasn't the greatest though...)

Is it the quality of the video, or is your grip on the jump you label as a good jump, a wee bit narrower?

I'd recommend no more that shoulder width (inside hands). We start everyone of with this: Grip with top hand, put lower arm next to pole, grip lower hand 1 handwidth from elbow. When moving to bigger poles (added shoulder width :) ), some add a finger or two, but no more than that.

None of the responses are correct. The issue is the action of the take-off in relationship to the hand hold. Lower the grip so that the top hand is always moving UP after takeoff.
