What goes on down in Reno?

Unread postby sdvaulter06 » Sun Jun 19, 2005 9:13 pm

I am wondering what the big event is that goes on in Reno? I was at a polevault camp this last weekend and a kid was saying he went, but didn't really explain much? Thanks a lot! Lance

obviously these guys arnt explaining much either. I heard its a big gathering where there are coaching lectures, vaulting for all levels, and if your old enough some of the big kids go wild with a party or two. Dont recomend that last one.

The Pole Vault Summit is mainly a two day event. On Friday, depending on what category you fall in (HS, College, Open, Coach) you will go to lectures and or learn by doing clinics. The lectures are given by top coaches from around the world and some elite athletes. Last year Mack and Stevenson gave some nice talks. Friday evening is the Elite competition in the big theater. Awesome! Saturday there are 10 competitions at the same time for people of all ability groups all day long. There will be more PV to watch than you have ever wanted! Other than this you will see your favorite vaulters walking around the hotel and most of them are happy to talk with you. I highly recommend going if you can find the means.

Where is it?

Unread postby sdvaulter06 » Mon Jun 20, 2005 2:00 pm

Is it all in the Reno Hilton? I mean do they have a space big enough for that many people? I checked for rooms and they had them like $250 total for 3 nights in the hotel? Is that all right? Thanks! Lance

It is all in the Hilton, it is a hotel and convention center. When you make your reservation, tell them you are with the pole vault summit, I think they have a special room rate.

Room rates have been about $79/night for the last few years.

poles?

Unread postby sdvaulter06 » Mon Jun 20, 2005 7:09 pm

Do you bring your own poles? You'd have to wouldn't you? Lance....How much does it cost to take poles on a plane?

You can bring your own poles. There are huge rooms downstairs that are filled with pole bags from everyone. I'm pretty sure that you can also borrow poles if you need to since one of the main sponsors is UCS Spirit...or at least some of the vaulters that I was with 2 years ago were doing so. As for flying poles, Becca has some info on all of the different airlines here: http://www.polevaultpower.com/airlines/

Oh, and sorry about not describing what it was when I first posted. I think that I just got a little bit too excited :P

And it really is crazy, because you will go down to one of the ballrooms and there will just be a line of pits and runways...like 8 or 9 (sorry can't remember exactly) going across. The number of vaulters at the opening talk on Friday morning is also very impressive; just a huge room full of vaulters. The Friday night elite competition is something not to be missed, and almost everyone that you see walking around will be a pole vaulter...high school, college, elite, big time elite (Derek Miles, Tommy Skipper, Toby Stevenson, Tim Mack, Stacy Dragila, Chelsea Johnson, April Steiner, etc.) just walking around and saying hi and talking to you.

Most people bring their own poles. The airlines vary on how much they charge. We usually don't get charged on the way down but we do get charged on the way back. UCS does have poles available to borrow when you are there. I wouldn't count on them though.
