Men's Top Five All-Time?

For my own devious purposes, I'll wait until tomorrow to post the top five (and ten) vaulters with the highest personal best marks. For now, though, I'd like to ask you to search your memory and write down who you think the top five would be. Of course, you could look it up (I did, eventually), but it might be fun to guess, first. Just to show my good intentions and generosity, I'll give you Bubka as number one. Now wasn't that nice of me?

Cheers,
Roger

Obviously the only person on that list using the 6.40 model was Ross.

The others are just slackers...

You guys are just too good. Those who responded to the forum, which I didn't expect, were mainly so accurate as to raise doubts that they didn't cheat a peek at some list, somewhere. Four of the six respondents had the top five right, and three of the four had all the heights. I'm amazed. I know that I don't follow the men's event as closely as I do the women's, but I'm not sure I could pick the women's top five off the top of my head, and the only personal bests I'd be sure of would be those of Isinbayeva and Dragila.

My original "devious purpose" was to raise the question of whether Okkert Brits was seriously neglected in our considerations of the very top vaulters. Obviously not, for this group of fans of the event. I'll save my reasons for this interest as a separate post, when I include it in a listing of the Top Ten. However, for now, I'll close with the promised listing of Top Five All-time Vaulters: just as Chris, Mighty Mouse, achtung and Scott had them:

Top Five All-Time Outdoors

6.14 Sergey Bubka (UKR) Sestriere 1994-07-31
6.05 Maksim Tarasov (RUS) Athína 1999-06-16
6.05 Dmitriy Markov (AUS) Edmonton 2001-08-09
6.03 Okkert Brits (RSA) Köln 1995-08-18
6.03 Jeff Hartwig (USA) Uniondale 1998-07-21

Of the jumps i have seen of Okkert Brits jump, i wouldnt really expect him to go 6.03 meters. I havent seen many jumps of his, but the ones i have, it really doesnt look like he could of jumped that high. Was he just lucky on the 6.03 jump? or has he had more jumps in the 5.90+ range.

Saw one jump of his on TV where he cleared 5.95 by a country mile with the pole never even getting CLOSE to vertical...wild stuff!
