Yelena Isinbayeva wants to set new world record at 2016 Olympics

After her announcing her return to competition, pole vault legend Yelena Isinbayeva has her sights set on a new world record.

Yelena Isinbayeva is targeting a new pole vault world record at the 2016 Olympic Games after confirming her return to competition.

The Russian gave birth to a baby girl last June and has been away from the sport for the past 18 months.

Isinbayeva, a two-time Olympic champion who has broken the world record 28 times in her storied career, set the current highest vault back in August 2009.

And the 32-year-old is looking to better that mark of 5.06 metres in Rio de Janeiro next year, although Isinbayeva insists she will only compete in Brazil if she feels she has a chance of winning another gold.

"I want it so much [to beat the world record in Rio]," she said. "The Olympics is a very special event for me. And I believe that with a strong will and desire anything is possible.

"I hope at the end of this year I will be able to decide whether I'm ready to compete for the gold medal at the 2016 Olympics.

"I'll need some time to finalise my decision. But if my old injuries prevent me from obtaining my top form I'll quit."

I'm unclear what that article said, probably lost in the translation. Has she returned to Training, or has she/is she jumping actively this year. I hope she's jumping this year seriously.

She is training this year but not competing. Her plan is to return to competition next year.

Funny how Demi Payne can get on the runway 5 days after giving birth, and return to competition a few months later, but Isinbayeva needs two years! ;)
