PARIS (AP) - Olympic gold medalist Steven Hooker of Australia pole vaulted 6 meters for the third time in a fortnight but failed again at his attempt to break Sergey Bubka's world record at the SEAT indoor meet on Friday.
Hooker cleared 6 meters at his third attempt but three shots at 6.16 were missed at Bercy Arena.
Bubka has held the indoor record of 6.15 since 1993.

Hooker achieved 6.01 in New York on Jan. 30, and 6.06 _ the eighth highest mark ever _ at Boston last Saturday.

Australia's Olympic polevault champion Steve Hooker eased to victory at the Paris-Bercy indoor meeting on Friday, but was thwarted again in his bid to snatch Sergei Bubka's 16-year-old world record of 6.15m.

Hooker cleared 6.00m with France's Romain Mesnil and Derek Miles of the United States finishing on 5.72m.

The Australian arrived in Paris fresh from achieving 6.06m at the Boston Indoor Games last weekend, the second-best performer of all-time.

"I wasn't very well, not very fresh. I didn't think about the record," said Hooker who has been suffering from a fever. I hope to do a good jump in Donetsk."

Hooker will head for Donetsk on Sunday to take part in a meeting created by Bubka.

that would be epic, Hooker breaking Bubka's WR at Bubka's own meet

Anyone else a little suprised that he jumped 6m 3 meets in a row and the headline talks about what he didn't do? HDid Bubka ever go 3 meets in a row over 6m... Hartwig... Tarasov??

Bubkav apparently did it 5 meets in a row in 1991.

Hartwig has done 2 in a row but not three. I don't think Tarasov ever did it twice in a row.

Hey Lax PV! I HAVE noticed that he always "Fails to get Bubka's record", instead of what he DOES. Good call!

He's on an amazing roll and there's no reason to think it will end anytime soon. Nine attempts in three weeks at the WR has got to be telling him something. Hope he gets it at Bubka's!! Bubba

Bubka had a couple nice runs - one in 1991 ...

Code: Select all

Height     Date       Location      Days
6.00       02/09/91   Volgograd*     329
6.08   i   02/09/91   Volgograd        0
6.00   i   03/09/91   Sevilla         28
6.10   i   03/15/91   San Sebastian    6
6.00       03/19/91   Donyetsk*        4
6.11   i   03/19/91   Donyetsk         0
6.12   i   03/23/91   Grenoble         4
6.00       04/04/91   Bratislava      12

... and another one in 1993 ...

Code: Select all

Height     Date       Location      Days
6.01   I   02/07/93   Grenoble       141
6.05   i   02/13/93   Lievin           6
6.14   i   02/13/93   Lievin           0
6.15   i   02/21/93   Donyetsk         8
6.05   i   03/05/93   Berlin          12

The * indicates en-route marks (in the same meet).

In the 1991 run, he cleared 6.00 or higher 5 times in 14 days!

And in the 1993 run, he cleared 6.01 or higher 4 times in 14 days! (Compared to Hooker's 3 times in 15 days.)

In 1999, Maxim Tarasov had 5 clearances of 6.00+, but none in consecutive weeks.

That same year, Jeff Hartwig had a 6.00 in Athens on 6/16 and then his 6.02 AR in Eugene on 6/25 - 9 days apart.

Rodion Gataullin had an indoor 6.00 in Leningrad and then a 6.02 in Gomel 13 days apart in Jan/Feb 1989. Then again in 1993, he went 6.00 twice in 11 days - first in Moscow on 2/2, then in Lievin on 2/13.

So I guess Hooker's still second all-time in this as a well.

Leave it to Gerard or the great Roger Ruth to readily have those stats available. Bubba
