Chiaraviglio - Argentina’s new Athletics Jewel
Wednesday 19 November 2003

16 year-old pole vaulter Germán Chiaraviglio is the new rising star of Argentinean Athletics having conquered the first major international height of any career in athletics, the World Youth title earlier this year in Sherbrooke, Canada.

Luis Vinker brings us a feature length study of Chiaraviglio, his family, and his career to date.

On 12 July 2003, it was a windy and rather cold morning in Sherbrooke, Canada, at the World Youth Championships.

“We had got the new pole just one day before the finals and Germán was able to practice only a few jumps. Nevertheless, he decided to take part in the competition using that pole and not the old one, which had become too flexibleâ€Â

This kid in my pole vault club tried to jump on Bill Payne's pole we have and got slammed on to the runway. It was pretty funny.

Cut ol' Bill some slack, he was pretty stylish back then, plus I don't think Bill ever backed down from a scuffle either. Insulting his hairdo might incite one heckuva brawl. Wild Bill Payne didn't get that nick name because it sounded good, he was Wild Bill Payne. That boy could jump!

Bill was the real deal. Anybody who can jump 19' on an Altius, retire & two years later after a training base that consisted of Natty Lights and Copenhagen smokes 18'4 and nearly makes 18'10" first meet out, should put him in the vault hall of fame. If he could have taken off past 9', he would have been a legitimate threat for 6 meters. All you have to see is that 18'8" vault of his from Fairfax where he puts 1 1/2 feet on it to know the talent was definitely there for more than his 19'2 3/4" PR showed.
