Isinbayeva sleepwalks into pole vault final
John E. Gibson / Daily Yomiuri Sportswriter

OSAKA--As per her routine, Yelena Isinbayeva spent much of the women's pole vault with her feet up and a towel draped over her head on Sunday night, at Nagai Stadium.

The world record-holder finally jumped into the qualifying round at the height needed to advance, and appears ready to wipe out the competition at the IAAF world championships.

Isinbayeva looked relieved to finally get into action as she floated over the qualifying mark of 4.55 in one long-awaited attempt.

The Russian, who briefly poked her head out from the towel a couple of times to check the progress of the event, took her only attempt 1 hour 52 minutes after the competition started.

She put plenty of air between herself and the bar as she went over, waived to the crowd and waited a little more as the field dwindled down. The top 12 reached the final, which starts here Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Russian Svetlana Feofanova had no trouble clearing, and neither did Jennifer Stuczynski of the United States, who also sat watching the field of 33 vaulters shrink until the bar reached 4.55.

Isinbayeva said her biggest challenge was the weather.

"It was very hot for me and I needed to wait more than two hours to jump," she said, hedging a bit on the time of the wait.

"But I'm used to [doing] this, I focused on that single jump," the 25-year-old said about having to pass the time while other competitors gradually raised the bar.

"I think in the finals I can jump really high. Believe me, the pole vault area is good."

Takayo Kondo tied her Japan record and personal best when she cleared 4.35 meters on her third attempt.

But Kondo, who set the mark in May of 2005, couldn't surpass the record, crashing into the bar three times at 4.45 meters.

Japan National Record

Becca posted a story from a Japanese site that included:

"Takayo Kondo tied her Japan record and personal best when she cleared 4.35 meters on her third attempt. But Kondo, who set the mark in May of 2005, couldn't surpass the record, crashing into the bar three times at 4.45 meters."

Strange, since the quote originated from a Japanese source, but I have the Japanese national record as:

4.36 Ikuko Nishikort (1980-01-05) 1 Hiroshima 2006-04-29

I could be mistaken about that, but a quick check finds Nishikort's as the NR in Winfried Kramer's ATFS-published National Athletics Records For All Countries in the World. Winfried, I'd believe.

4 Russians and 2 Poles againt six other competitors representing rest of the world. Interesting group. It can be easily the greatest ever pole vault competition. At least 6-7 of the finalists may clear 4.80 in co-operating weather conditions.

Women's pole vault

Nikki McEwen (Medford, Ore.): Things were going very well, but I didn't make 4.45 (14-7 ¼), so you could say I finished rough. I think that this will be a building block for next year. The experience of being here was good; I wished I could've jumped better, but it just didn't happen.

Jillian Schwartz (Jonesboro, Ark.): It was a tough competition. I jumped my season best tonight, so I did what I could. I'm not happy with the outcome. If I had just made more first attempts, it would have saved me a lot of jumps. All in all, the conditions were good, and there's not a whole lot I could've done. I just wished I could've jumped a couple inches higher.

Jennifer Stuczynski (Churchville, N.Y.): Qualifying is easy when you make it on your first attempts. (On her left ankle) I originally hurt it in London, and I got some treatment on it when I got here. I thought it was getting better, but now it's moved into my Achilles. This is the first time I've tested it. I really have not done much, because it hurts. I just taped it tighter tonight.

Badurova into final but no repeat of 2005 success for Pospisilova-Cechlova
Katerina Badurova
Pole vaulter Katerina Badurova, was the first of the Czech Republic's athletes to qualify for the finals at the World Athletics Championships in Japan's Osaka. The 24-year-old holds the Czech women's pole vault record and is hoping to break it with a new personal best in Tuesday's final.
Badurova's boyfriend Tomas Janku has also made it beyond the heats in his discipline, the high jump. In the final Janku will be up against another Czech high jumper, Jaroslav Baba.
But things haven't gone so well for some other fancied Czechs. Two years ago Vera Pospisilova-Cechlova was celebrating bronze in the discus at the last World Championships in Helsinki; this year she is on an early plane home, after failing to even make the final. The Czech long-jumper Denisa Scerbova also misses out; the 21-year-old was just one centimetre short of qualification.
