Isinbayeva Sets 13th Pole-Vault Record
By CIARAN GILES
MADRID, Spain - Yelena Isinbayeva of Russia set yet another world record in the pole vault Sunday, jumping 16 feet, 3/4 inches at the European Indoor Championships.
The 22-year-old Isinbayeva notched a new world record for the 13th time. She set the previous indoor mark with a jump of 16-1/2 last month.
"I'm so happy that I broke the record today and I hope it won't be the last this year," Isinbayeva said. "I dedicate this to the public of Madrid."
Isinbayeva has now set four indoor world records this season. She also set the outdoor record of 16-1 1/4 at the Athens Olympics, then raised it to 16-1 3/4 in September.
Her nearest competitor Sunday was Poland's Anna Rogowska, who took silver with a jump of 15-7. Monika Pyrek of Poland was third (15-5).

Isinbayeva vaults 4.90 World Indoor Record - European Indoor Champs - DAY THREE - PM session - WOMEN’s events
Sunday 6 March 2005
Madrid, Spain - For the fourth time in as many competitions this winter, Yelena Isinbayeva added yet another centimetre to the World Indoor record in the Pole Vault to cap a thoroughly entertaining and fiercely competitive final day at the European Indoor Championships in the Spanish capital.
After an early miss at 4.60, a height only five in the field ultimately cleared, the 22-year-old Olympic champion displayed exemplary form as she sailed over 4.70, 4.80 and 4.90 with ease, the last with perhaps a dozen centimetres to spare.
“I’m just very happy that I was able to jump a World record for the crowd here,â€Â

Isinbayeva reaches new heights
  March 07 2005 at 11:45AM
Madrid - Yelena Isinbayeva has been the star of the global indoor athletics circuit this winter and the Russian pole vaulter hit the heights with her fourth world indoor record on Sunday.
Isinbayeva cleared 4,90m to grab the gold medal at the European Indoor Championships.
Now, the bubbly 2004 Woman Athlete of the Year will turn her sights towards the summer.
"I want to continue to break world records. Sergey Bubka set 35 records, I want to jump 36," said Isinbayeva.
'I was a gymnast when I was younger and didn't follow athletics'
She has already made a good start with 13 world records, indoors and out, and at the age of 22, the vaulter from Volgagrad has plenty of time to add many more, if she can stay injury free.
The legendary Bubka, now an International Olympic Committee member, is now a good friend of Isinbayeva and the Ukrainian has passed on a few tips on technique.
However, Bubka wasn't always such a well-known name to Isinbayeva.
"I was a gymnast when I was younger and didn't follow athletics in my early teens when he was jumping so well. My coach, after I changed to vaulting, said I could be like Bubka
"But my first response was 'who's she?'" revealed Isinabyeva.
'I feel sure I'll get to five metres soon'
Isinbayeva looked like she could have added to her record tally in the Spanish capital with her soaring clearance at her winning height but she decided to call it a day at that point.
"Actually, I was very tired after a long indoor season. Now I'm going to have one or two weeks break before getting back into training."
Isinbayeva was exhausted enough to have a quick nap during the competition on Sunday, killing time while less-talented vaulters went through the motions and contested the minor medals.
"I have to come into the stadium with everybody else and then there is a long wait. I sleep a little in order to switch off," she admitted.
The magical height of five metres is now on her mind, and it could easily be broken this summer.
Isinbayeva says that she has cleared the height in training.
"And I'm sure I can do it in competition. Everybody asks me why I only increase my records centimetre-by-centimetre, just like they used to ask Bubka, and the reason is that a world record requires a lot of effort.
"But I feel sure I'll get to five metres soon."
Isinbayeva now is on top of the world in every respect, having won the Olympic gold medal last summer.
However, she has had her share of downs as well as ups.
A Russian coach reduced her to a sobbing wreck with some crude criticism when she failed to clear a height in the qualifying competition at the 2000 Olympics.
"He accused me of being a tourist. It wasn't very nice but I think I've showed him that I had some talent," said Isinbayeva. - Sapa-AFP
