Great Scott, dad has Sally soaring

North East pole-vaulting is reaching new heights with a father and daughter partnership spearheading the way.

Currently leading the UK under-15 rankings, Gateshead's Sally Scott has had the support and coaching know-how of her father Jamie to help her clear a massive 3:10m, which is 30cm higher than her nearest rivals.

Sally's massive clearance is a sure sign of her commitment to the sport as only three other UK athletes of her age in the history of the event have gone higher, with the UK record being 3:60m by Hannah Olsen which she set three years ago.

Still only 13, Sally lifted the gold medal in the North of England Under-17 Championships and also finished in sixth place in the AAAs despite being the youngest girl in the competition. And Sally isn't the only one to benefit from the coaching skills of her father, who was recognised recently when he was awarded UKA's North East Emerging Coach of the Year.

Another Gateshead Harrier, Tim Parkin, has improved over the winter months with Jamie's help and is now ranked seventh in the indoor listings after finishing fifth in the AAAs Championships.

Both Sally and Tim took up pole vaulting thanks to UKA development initiatives.

Sally attended a girls pole vault session, supported by Aqua Pura funding while Tim was spotted by Northumberland schoolteacher and former pole vaulter, Rob Leonard, who had organised a Startrack course for budding pole vaulters.

With Washington-based Mark Christie setting the standard as he chases a Commonwealth Games place, the region is set for take off in the field of pole vaulting which is remarkable for a region which is extremely bare of indoor facilities!
