Thanks for sharing that achtungpv - in fact Simon achieved his great performances with neither talent - in the general sense of that word - nor good coaching! He had an enormous drive to succeed and with a decent coach when he started he could have joined the 6.00m club at a time when there were few in it.

Just to clarify things i should point out that I was the coach who twenty eight years ago was not good enough to help Simon achieve what he was capable of. He only jumped 4.90m as an 18 year old in Adelaide - but in my defence I must add that was before I had ever met Petrov or seriously studied Bubka. :yes:

Vaulting 19 feet with no talent

I feel like a voyeur reading discussions about my complete lack of ability as a vaulter ;-)

Alan is very modest, he was a great coach, friend and father figure to me from when I was 11 years old through to today (God, I think I'm now 41). I never would have known about the big bad World of vaulting out there had it not been for Alan, and it would have been impossible for me to get to 19 feet without him. I am proud of having vaulted 5.80, even more so than someone with athletic talent would have been. If you are slow, uncoordinated, left handed or all of the above - have faith. I jumped 19 feet in my 19th year of vaulting !
