Hi I'm a junior in high school and I am the most knowledgable person on the subject of pole vault in my school, but that is not good enough. Our coach this past year was great and knew what he was talking about, but seeing he is gone and we won't get a new coach that knows anything I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to do at practices to improve.

the best thing you can do is either join a local club or find a private coach in your area.

i basically taught myself how to vault. all i needed was a good vaulter or just someone who knows what they are doing to spot me and give me immediate feedback. If you don't have a teammate who knows alot about vaulting, i suggest either teaching them (or tell them to self-study the sport) or join a club like suggested before.

why don't you contact your old coach and ask him to write up some workouts for you to do? I wrote workouts for a school i used to coach at for a year while they were trying to find a new coach. You won't get the technical guidance, but atleast you'll have some things to do.

the club is the best idea... or keep posting on here when you run into trouble, it can really help you out. Look on here for drills, strength exercises, all sorts of things to help you vault, other than just vaulting.

if your vault coach just quit, start the sesason off with just running work, Plyos/exposive/running tec, then once your back in shape and a better athleate start to do PV drills, off the pit, then once you get used to doing pole things correctly, go to the pit start 1/2/3 step drills, then start moving back after a hand full of practices and trying to put together jumps..... and if that doesnt go well, find a your local PV club/coach and join.

But the best things for you and your team mates would be to find a club.[/b]

When I was in HS ( in the 70's) we had a coach but he nothing at all about the vault. He would just tell us " run and jump!"
I got all the way up to 14 feet by the time I was junior by lifting, running 400's and just asking other vaulters at meets how they did what they did. At the end of my junior year I was asked to drive up to Rutgers U 2 times a week to vault with the college guys, and I did. I learned the swing then. I don't know if it is legal to vault with college guys, but look into it.
I think is you have the swing down, you don't need a coach.
A coach will get you above 15 or 16 feet .
