Kicking the bar...

Our girls coach sometimes has them place the bar up about 3ft or so higher than their PR and have them run from maybe an 8step and vault and kick it off to help get their legs up... it seems logical but i couldn't help to think that this would also cause you to keep your heading looking at the bar the whole time.

any input? thanks.

when I was in high school back in the 70's. I did the same thing I didn't have a coach and so the only way I thought I would get higher was to kick the bar off, hold a 12' pole and shoot for 16' it worked for me. my sr year I only vaulted to 2 years. I cleared 11'6 in a meet, only cleared 12' once in practice. than one day in a meet it was me and one other guy and he had cleared 12'6 before. the meet was mostly over and I had missed my first time at 12', I closed my eyes and said this is my last year so make it good, and I ask GOD for some help. I started my run down the run way planted my pole, next thing I knew I was in the pit. It felt GREAT for some reason. The guy that I was vaulting againest came up to me and told me he gave-up. I found out later from my coach, he was setting in the stands watching. told me that with my 12' pole, I must had went over 15' and it looked so pretty he couldn't beleive it. this is the Jump that I will never forget. It wasn't a dream. I went on to college and cleared 14'6 in door only and that was the end of my vaulting.
