Shin splints gone bad, or what?

Unread postby FCCVaulter » Thu Apr 07, 2005 12:13 pm

Well this is more of i guess a medical question...ive had what everyone thought was just a really bad case of shin splints so i took off spring break and just got treatment, well this is where it gets bad...i thought i was fine but i competed this week and now my shin hurts so bad i cant even jog...apparently numbness on the top of the foot plus pain is the beginning of compartment syndrome...but im hoping that it is just a stress fracture but both will sideline me for a while..its on my left shin, the one that takes all the pressure when i jump off...well i should get to my question..has neone had a similar problem and if so how the heck did they cope with it, cuz this is ridiculous.. i hav to sit out till conference championships which isnt good bc i sooo need to go to state and i need to be in top health!!!!

Compartmental Sydrome isn't to common, but it is definalty seen more in runners. Some backgrounnd on it is the tendon and connective tissue sheth around ur legs can only stretch so much, but when you run, blood is pumped to ur legs and presses against the bone hence the pain. Anyways, if you DO have Compartmental Sydrome, see a dotctor right away, get surgery as quick as possible, all they will do is make a insicion about 6 inches on your interior and frontal part of ur leg and cut the sheth. Your recovery will actaully be fairly quick seeing its not cutting through any major muscles, and u will be grounded for a max of 6 weeks. Also, they will probably do both legs, because i honestly have never heard of compartmental sydrom in ONE leg, but you could be a first.

Sounds like you should make an appointment with a doctor ASAP. Numbness and tingling is not good. If it gets worse you might need to go to the ER.
