Using midstep mark to adjust takeoff
It seems several club and college coaches use midstep mark to adjust takeoff. I am a high school coach with 7 years experience and am just trying to learn about the use of the midstep mark.

Re: Using midstep mark to adjust takeoff
its pretty straight forward. heres an example of hw it works
lets say vaulter x in practice seems to always have his best jumps on his 7 left run hitting 50 ft at the mid and 12 ft at the take off. now vaulter goes to a meet, runs down and hits 49'6, but chops like crazy and still hits 12' at the take off. if your only staring at take off your eyes might not have seen him shorten up, and you think hes okay. if you see his mid is in 6 inches, it would make sense to back him up 6.
this also goes for being out. if he runs down and 51 ft, and takes big long steps to 12. the answer is to move him in (although I don't think id go the whole foot at a time, maybe 6 and see where he is next jump). if your only looking at take off mark, your missing the majority of the problem, and only looking for symptoms.
some coaches don't even bother with the take off step, if your mid is on, high odds the rest of your run is going to be good.
now granted if theres a smoking tail wind, it might move out a few inches, or if theres crappy conditions it may need to move it a little.
