Do both, and vary your grip width with each as well, a strong back and lats isn't going to hurt your vaulting one bit. Your core is the most important part of the body to strengthen (abs, lower back) and parts of the body become less important as you move away from the core. Your mid to upper back and lats play a big role in your ability to generate a big swing on the pole, not to mention our backs take a pounding from vaulting so strengthening this area helps ease that somewhat.

i would have to say pull ups
but it might be benneficial to mix in pull ups, chin ups, wide grip, wide grip behind the head, narrow grip, alternating grip facing sideways alternating sides with your head, one arm(ok, i have never been able to do this, has anyone on the board ever been successful)
they will all help

could do them one handed when I was 18, not now. Grip bar with right hand, grip just below right wrist with left hand for balance and go for it.

when I used to climb alot I could do one one handed pull up with no support from my left, not anymore though. That was only last year. last year I could do 30 pull ups with both hands too but now my max is about 20.

I think that doing both is beneficial for pv. I do both and one handed with left and right but I need to hold on to my opposite wrist to do it. I'm a girl after all, so doing it two handed is rough enough.

try doing pull ups with one finger holding the bar on each hand. that always turns the football players heads in our weight room when my brother and i do them

heh im pretty sur emy finger wouldnt be long enough to fit like that it would be too small of a room between the back of my finger and the index.
