Dang pole transitioning

Unread postby LHSpolevault » Tue Feb 13, 2007 3:46 pm

I've been jumping on a 13'7" 140 Spirit lately and it's getting pretty soft. The next poles I have are a 14' 135 Maxima3 and 14' 140 Pacer. I keep my grip the same height as the 13'7" 140 and I'm still not getting close enough penetration and I'm getting thrown around for some reason.

Any insight to this? I think it could be mental just b/c they're bigger poles, but who knows. My steps are fine and I'm doing what I normally do when I plant (which is good).

It sounds like it could be mental, but if you can find the flexes it will help a little. Theres a range for the flexes in a 140 and a 135, and you might be on a really soft 13'7 140 to a really stiff 14' 135.

Whats the exact hieght you are holding on the 13'7"? The 14' 135 should be equivalent to about a 13'7 145, so it should be a nice transition. Does it FEEL that much stiffer, or does it feel like you just arent hitting it? Is it on your long run? When i move up poles on my long run, sometimes im hesitant at take off, or im looking forward rather than up. Thats why you might be getting thrown around,.keep a high take off angle, and dont row out. Also make sure you arent waiting to long to swing on this new pole, in hopes of finding out whether you are going to make it in the pit or not. You will make it, just take off swing like you do on 13'7 140.

If your PR is 13' on 6 lefts you should try to stay on 13'7" poles that are stronger in stiffness or weight.
BUT if you have to go to 14' you will need to take 1 or 2 more lefts to get on them.
I really think it best to jump at or above your grip before moving to the next length pole.
Have you tried lowering your grip 1 fist on the 13'7" to see if you can get more POP on top, giving you the opportunity to work on form?

Grip low and don't try to bend it.

just over emphasize technique on the smaller pole holding lower. take that to the top of the 13 6 pole, master that, then hold down on the 14 foot. it should be alright. just make sure to hit the take off on the 14 foot, esp if your holding higher than normal.

good luck

My honest opinion, a 155 13'6 to a 14' 180 is a huge leap. Thats the equivalent of approximately a 155 to a 190 on a 13'6 scale. I dont mean to break your spirits, but its good that you are scared crapless, because you dont have a chance to get on that pole without at least 4 or 5 transition poles. Either get pole transitions or like becca said, grip low and dont try to bend it.

I am currently on the equivalent of a 14'3 180 or 185 on my long run gripping 14', and the last time i jumped on a 13'6 155, or equivalent, was 3 years ago, on a 14' 140 holding 12'9.

It will all come in time of course, but if i tried to jump poles that big id try it, get thrown back down the runway or dislocate my shoulders a few times, until i realized i couldnt do it. Save yourself some pain and find a 13'6 160 or a 14' 150.
