Athletic Suppliments, yay or nay?

A forum to discuss overall training techniques, nutrition, injuries, etc. Discussion of actual pole vault technique should go in the Technique forum.

I was reading this thread and signing my Student Athlete papers  , I noticed that although creatine is not banned by the NCAA, it may be banned by your University, as it is with mine (Syracuse).

"Effective January 1998, athletic department policy bans the use of nutritional supplements, specifically Creatine, from use by all student-athletes..."

although how strictly this ban is enforced I dont know.

Probably not at all, I doubt your school has the $$ to pay to test you guys for it.

I bet it was a move on their part to reduce their liability. If some kids gets hurt because he was dehydrated from improperly using creatine, they can just say that he wasn't supposed to be using it anyway and it's not their fault.

SU is loaded so they probably would have the money to test for it if they really wanted (the forms werent Track specific), but the creatine ban was part of a liability waiver that removed Syracuse from any liability due to misused supplements, so Id bet your right

I believe that Syracuse Univ. may have been one of the wrestling teams that had very serious problems with unsafe creatine usage in the past. That would explain the departmental ban.

As for testing, only vegetarians would not test "positive" for creatine so I seriously doubt the ban is enforced.

For a long time, i suplimented protein and vitamins - only to now discover that i can meet all my needs through whole foods. i was spending tons of money and i was running on toxicity levels on some vitamins and minerals.

On occasion i will still supplement 5g or so of protein, if i know i haven't gotten all I need. Your body can only denature about 7g of protein every hour, and if you're getting much more than that, you'll be spending more time on the pot than in the weight room !

I have seen very good results with creatine cycling, with low dosages - and i absolutely encourage the safe usage of the product, if anyone would like a thourhough explination of the happenings on with Creatine and ATP production, i'd be happy to explain it.

I also strongly encourage any nutrition questions to be directed at a Registered Dietitian, ESPECIALLY when it comes to supplementation. Since meeting with a nutritionist my training plateau has taken an upward turn and i strongly encourage all athletes to see one!

Also - do all the research you can. The better educated you are, the more thoughts you can think, and the better decisions you can make regarding your diet! Pubmed is a wonderful source for medical studies, peer reviewed articles and other medical information and can be found here

Good luck training everyone, indoors is coming soon, and hopefully i will see some of you out there!

cheers
