Re: stress fracture.

I had this three years in colege and got two stress fractures out of downing the ibuprofin and running through the pain. A lot of good advice given allready. I found I was heal striking really bad my last few steps so if this is an issue wearing a good pair of flats can help as you try to fix your run. I iced before and after practice and meets. I warmed up on stationary bike. I also found that I could run stairs without creating an issue just making sure I struck the stair with the front half of my foot (again avoiding the heel strike). This allowed my to get some form of usefull training in. I also only jumped for a full practice short run once a week and only took a few jumps 2-3 from a long run the other vaulting day. If you symptoms are primarly in you takeoff leg ultimatly it's probably poor mechanics in the last couple step of you run that is causing the issue more than anything else.

I got to rest it for the most part of the summer minus normal activities and football workouts. We also went to a physical therapist and the hospital multiple times. Over 2 months I was told I had shin splints, stress fracture, tendinitis, and fallen arches. So we got arch supports and the Nike pole vault spikes because of the arch support in it. Now this year I have only been jumping for 3 weeks and I am already experiencing pain in my leg (same leg I had the stress fracture in). I didn’t have hardly any problems in football with it and now it’s started again. I really do not my year to be cut short. Any advices you give me would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. most of the problems are in my trail leg.

I'm assuming everything I said on that you don't have the true shin splint anterior compartment syndrome...pain on the outside(lateral) portion of your leg over the tibialis anterior m... Most shin pain that leads to stress fracture is over the bony portion (medial) aspect of the shin or tibia. Some of the advice is great for true shin splints anterior compartment syndrome but I really question whether or not you have true shin splints...please clarify where your symptoms are medial or lateral.

I also just noticed you mentioned it is primarily in your trail leg as I suspected in my previous post. I really think ultimately it is being caused by your mechanics in the last four to six steps. Everything else is chasing and treating symptoms from this.

I had really bad shin splints (medial side), and what really helped me was changing the mechanics of my run, because i used to think sprinting was done by staying on my toes (plantar flex) which is the opposite of how I should be running (dorsi flexed). not sure if thats the issue with you though. just a thought...
