I am on the varisty team and we normally just run about 3 miles rarely more thoe

i assumed he ment like 40+ miles a week....a low to moderate distance for cross runners i believe.

I'm in cross right now to stay in shape for vaulting, I did the same thing last year and i could definately tell that it helped compared to the year before -I guess its better than not doing any sport at all.
