What exactly does bench press have to do with pole vaulting? The movement is slow and non related to actual movements in the vault. Hey I bench too (305 at 34 yrs old and 160lbs.) but was asked that by a coach after a lecture.

Want to see your responses.

I agree bench has nothin to do with vault, we do it so that we are training all our muscles instead of just lats and shoulders. Vaulters wouldn't look so good if we all ahd huge shoulders lats like a flying squirrel and chests like distance runners ;)

the plant is a little like a bench press. no its probably more like a millitary press because you push up. ok I guess the bench doesent realy have much to do with the vault.

I agree....Myself only being a 250 guy, I only do the movement for speed and power. Take 175, go down and up as fast as I can for 3 reps. Doesnt really correlate to pole vaulting, But I like to incorporate power wherever I can.

The best lift for a vaulter is a Clean. Hang cleans for quickness(265 in college); full power cleans earlier in the season. Bench has no importance.

the bench just helps us guys to keep up the vaulter reputation of how we are with the ladies ;)

215 lbs, but i believe that an incline banch would be more of a useful lift for vaulting than flat bench. just because of the upward plant motion. But everyone should know that biceps are where its at! ;) i wish i had some

As a freshman in High School I put up 200 but during football season I really screwed up my shoulder so I couldn't lift for about a year. I just started lifting again like a week ago and I havn't maxed yet because I don't want to depress myself. I'm guessing somewhere around 180 since I still did some maintenace lifting while I was hurt. If we are talking biceps then mine is 15" around. Not bad for a 15 year old if I do say so myslef.
