hip flexor strain
hip flexor strain
the schools trainer diagnosed me with a slight hip flexor strain on my left hip. I just started polevaulting this year in addition to running distance. I've been doing my distance running for a while so I know that its not from that. Anyway after taking a few days off I vaulted for an hour yesterday, and then ran six miles today, my hip started hurting again today. If anyone has been in a situation like this let me know what you did to make it better. Hip Flexor stretches would be helpful too.

I had a blew my hip flexer out a few years ago. number 1 REST. a little stretch I did that helps is on the couch watching tv just let your leg rest on the floor. and just keep it there, if that is too hard of an angle put something under your foot, books blankets... There is a million ways you and hit the hip flexer by moving your leg, holding a lunge. but man you got to rest.
I've fought hip flexor strains, both sides, all my life. You've got to rest it to let it heal. Afterwards, I believe more in leg swings, front-to-back and side-to-side than static stretches. A moderate strength builder that I think helps is to sit on the floor, legs straight in front of you. Lift the right leg about ten inches above the ground, then point the right foot to the left and kick the leg leftward about ten to thirty times, depending on your conditioning. Do the same with the left leg.
I don't have much trouble with it anymore, but at my advanced age, I can't generate enough speed to put my flexors in jeopardy!

o i just finally got over a hip flexor strain. it was terrible cuz it wasnt that painful throughout, but painful enough that every time i tried to get back in the workout, i always had to quit practice early cuz my hip would become more painful. this ended up taking two months to fully heal, hope that it wont be like that for you, but heres what i might recommend (this is what i basically did) if you wanna fight this injury.
go to physical therapy if youre not already. they do lots of stuff to help ya heal fast-ultrasound, electric stim and ice, and give you some great stretches and exercises that will not only help you get over the injury, but strengthen your hip so you wont get reinjured. totally worth your time.
back off from vaulting and anything explosive. do tons of drills that do not involve explosive jumping and running. some easy 3 or 4 step vaulting might be ok. take advantage of this time to gain other skills from the vault. for example i would go to practice and do whatveer few things i could do, and then do dozens of handstands which i used to suck at, but i slowly gained better control and body awareness and balance. still not that great at handstands, but it still was a good thing to do.
ice and more ice.
and i went to an athletic trainer, and he told me it would be worse to just do nothing at all. your case might be different, but he told me that if i did not at least work out some, the tissue would heal but it would be scarred. so im guessing that you shouldnt completely backoff either.he also said that hes seen this injury a lot with vaulters, especially beginners. dont know what that means to you except it might slightly explain why you got hurt in the first place.
and when you do work out, stretch stretch stretch. actually i first injured mine cuz i wasnt stretched enough. went into a back arch and my hip popped and it just got worse from there. dont get too eager to vault too much. take it day by day. you dont wanna start feeling great one day and get excited and vault so much that by the end your realli hurting (did that plenty of times)
ok well good luck and really hoping your hip gets better!!!!!!!!
