Health Problem

Unread postby BigStick Club » Fri Jun 17, 2005 2:48 pm

I have a problem.

Sometimes, when I pole vault, after I land I get to feeling really lightheaded/dizzy, on some occasions passing out. I have low blood pressure (98/52) and take 2-4 ibuprofen per jumping day.

Does anyone else do this? What can I do to help remedy it?

If you're passing out you should definitely see a doctor.

I have low blood pressure too, and sometimes I get a little light-headed, but if you are passing out maybe it is too low, or maybe there is something else wrong.

Back in my day we used to call it a "head rush". I too have always had moderately low BP. The passing out is just what it is, "passing out OR FAINTING" due to a lack of oxygen in the brain. Sort of like when you'd hold your breath and hyperventilate. It may be a growing thing but I'd have a Dr. see you about it. When it happens in the meantime, just sit down, give the blood a chance to flow back into the mellon and you'll be fine (based on if the Dr. says this is normal for you and your BP). I'm 53 and still get those head rushes every now and then and when they happen I just "take a break" wait for it to pass and usually exclaim, "whoa.......head rush". (it's a 60's thing). Good luck and let us know what you find out. Latr....Mike

That's how it is with me, too. Get up too fast, mostly. Like you said, pvchick, fall down and 'wake up'. Does your face and hands go numb?

Another thing I was thinking about is whether or not you are holding your breath and forgetting to breathe after you take off. It may feel like your head does when you have a real good sneeze but there's no release of the sneeze. If this is the case you are making yourself faint. Have someone watch you when you jump and see if you are breathing through the jump. If you aren't then start to. That may take care of a lot of your fainting and woozy spells. Later........... Mike

Souleman...that's classic! Well intentioned, I know...gosh, that was funny though. As a matter of fact, though, this thought has come up to me before and people have watched me...I breathe on stride through the runway, breathe in going up, breath down going down. Or visa versa.

I don't get the headaches, thank god!

I would have it check out. It could be a whole host of things. The low blood pressure should not be a problem. When I was in college my bp was 94/47 and I never experienced this. You may have a problem with your body being able to adjust the BP in response to change in position or cericogenic vertigo or something else.
