You need tricept's for holding your arms out straight to increase the amoun t of bend, and you need bicepts to help you do the rowing action near the end of the vault.

yeah, but you will never vault higher since the biggest pole you can carry down the runway is probably a 14' pole
How do you figure lat strength applies to carrying the weight of a pole?
Not saying pullups are bad, but unapplicable to carrying a pole.

i agree that pull ups do not relate all that much specifically to anything in vaulting, which was probably your point.
but you did relate pull ups to upper body strength(the subject of this thread) and someone that can only do 5 doesnt have much upper body strength to spare and i wouldnt want someone that weak running down the runway with a very big pole. it might spring out of their hands.
i guess i have just never heard of a 15' vaulter that could only do 5 pullups.
however, i do agree that upper body strength is overrated in pole vaulting.

Uh no, you don't want to increase the bend that way (( in response to the triceps comment earlier)). You want to increase the bend by jumping off the ground well and running fast. But that's another issue. Shoulders and abs are the most important muscle groups in my mind. Pull- ups, upright rows, overhead presses, or upside down pushups if you prefer. All the ab workouts you can think of. But that is when you are good and ready. I didn't lift for pole vault until I got to college, so yes work on learning the vault first!

you don't have to be huge or big, just compact and fit. making the body u have the best it can be matters more. ab work, military, pull ups, kip ups, etc. will help. learn good technique and get a good base of strength going and you will be off to a good start. core strength helps make it easier to do (especially in the beg.)
Fight the good fight: It's nice to be great but it's far greater to be nice.

I jumped 16' in high school...and could barely do 7 pull ups...lol! I do agree though, shoulders and abs are huge. I didn't start lifting until this year...and am on the biggest poles of my life...i would also say leg strength is a huge key as well. If you don't have leg strength, your run and takeoff wont be as powerful, and that is prolly 90% of the vault. If you look at Toby, his quads and hamstrings are huge. Prolly why he brings it down the runway and is on huge sticks! Just my opinion...
