Long swings - short approach, exaggerate the swing and shoot toward the back of the pit - can be really beneficial in helping vaulters develop their swing because it slows it down: best done with a very small or soft pole (BTB2 describes it a little bit)

Botcharnikov's Pole Climbing Drill - short run on competition pole or bigger, plant, jump, and try to literally climb to the top of the pole hand over hand - it would seem that this drill is pointless... until you actually try it... if your take-off is incorrect or the plant is late or you don't stay strong or you're gripping too high or too low you will not be able to climb up the pole very high. AUTOCORRECTIVE: The athlete can easily coach themself with this drill because of the amount and quality feedback they get.

There are a few variations, including one hand 'hopping', as used in Tim Mack's warm-up.

i have to say that one of the best drills i have done to teach swing timing is a "1 handed swing for length" drill. it is similar to the one handed plants mentioned before, except after you take off you swing and try and get as deep in the pit as possible landing flat on your back, or for a more advanced drill we put a mat on its side 2 meters or so behind the box which you have to swing and turn over.

this is good because if you swing to early or too late it will not work, it teaches you the feeling of letting your shoulders go thorough your hand(s) at take off until you reach full elasticity in the "c“ position, but if you do not swing as soon as you hit the "c" it will not work. to me it feels like what agapit is talking about when he says swing as soon as the takeoff is completed, although i have never met him so thats just my opinion not his :-)

Here I have several videos put together of different drills and work outs we are using.

(for some reason not all the videos show up with google chrome, but work with all other browsers)
