As the son of a concert pianist I can definitely say "spot on Alan". I really appreciated the close correlation between teaching the Chopin (who along with Haydn are my favorite classical composers) and how I think we could teach the vault. We start focusing on each part of the "piece" ( the 9 year old) and eventually strive to make the whole composition (the jump) seamless (the 11 year old). It's at that point we see the "eyes light up" in our athletes. What must be understood in classical music appreciation as well as in coaching , the performers (coaches) interpretation and performance of the piece can be and usually is different from one to the next. The goal is always the same however. Get the performance out there seamlessly and see "the eyes light up".
