USATF now requires certification of home-based facilities

I received my USATF 2008 club renewal packet today and noticed on the club practice insurance form under the "what is not covered?" section that:

"Home-Based Practice Facilities (unless specifically approved by USATF)" are not covered. "For more information contact the National Office (317) 713-4665."

What/how do those of you with USATF clubs out of your home handle this and what is involved?

My sources at USATF say the person to talk to in the national office is Jim Elias.

I called that number and it goes to Christina Herbie (sp?) in member services. It went straight to voice mail. I didn't leave a message yet because I will be running around and my cell phone doesn't work at home, but I will try calling again in a little bit.

well if you think about it home practice facilities are made by you and I. Usually speaking they are built by us and all the equipment we have peiced together.


Honestly would you insure a practice when you don't know if the location is actually safe. Hence you probably will need to get your practice facility saunctioned by the USATF. Who knows how or who can, but thats my guess to make sure the equipment and location is up to code.

I'd guess most home-based facilities are safer than most schools if for no other reason than the pits are usually on grass instead of concrete.

OK I just got off the phone with Kristina Hervey.

USATF decided a few months ago that they wanted to individually approve each home-based pole vault facility because of concerns about safety.

Clubs with home-based pole vault facilities need to submit the following:
- Pictures of the facility
- Practice hours
- Who will be supervising (remember that USATF rules now require anyone who has alone time with the kids to pass a background check)

These can be emailed to Kristina.Hervey@usatf.org

A few people will then look at these and decide whether or not the facility is approved.

If you are not approved by January 1st, practices at your home-based facility will no longer be covered under USATF insurance.
