7. If the jumping is going badly STOP JUMPING IMMEDIATELY BEFORE YOUR VAULTER LEARNS SOME BAD FAULTS. It is not uncommon for an ahlete's coordination to deteriorate suddenly without cause and, with a skill as complicated as the vault, this is not at all surprising. A few days of rest will often clear up this problem, but don't aggravate the poor coordination days (16).

Oops I forgot yesterday, so here are 2 today.

8. Vaulting workouts should be gauged to the vaulter's endurance level. Some vaulters, such as Bob Richards, could vault 30 times per day. Isaksson jumps for a maximum height every day. Bob Seagren seldom vaults between meets in mid-season, but has been known to run 8 miles a day. The athlete may profit more from running, hurdling, jumping or throwing the shot on off days. Training should be pleasurable and one should learn to enjoy all events.

9. Do not let a vaulter practice at too low heights. Except for a rank beginner, the vaulter should always jump at some height above his hand grip....Failure to practice at higher heights means that the vaulter will have to change his timing in competition and this can be disasterous. Ray Kring, an outstanding high school coach, makes his vaulters jump for height every day! (16)

10. WORRY A LOT. It's helpful for most coaches to worry a lot because it gives them an identity with their profession. There is also a tremendous feeling of relief and satisfaction when the worrying finally pays off in success (16).

hey becca

dr. ganslen was ahead of his time. very good stuff.. it's probably safe to say his books could answer any question that has been asked on pvp..

but.. thank you becca for doing this site.. nothing can match what this has added to pole vaulting........nothing
