Curling in a ball

Hi, I got a question. I've been watching some video and I've noticed that some people, after they swing their trail leg up, they curl into a ball, and then kick out of it. However, I've seen other videos of people swinging their trail leg, and then basically just going vertical without really curling into a ball. So which one is the better way of doing it?
