Any tips for vaulting when it is wet out?

The short version is ........ DON'T~!

jumping in the rain absolutely sucks. no better way to
say it. i have a conference champ. tomorrow and of
course, it may rain...just be prepared and try and do
your best

ya, like they said...it sucks. Its the easiest way to put it and its also way more dangerous. Your hands can slip easier.

Thats if you don't take precations. You can easily make sure ur hands dont slip by keeping ur pole covered, making sure some1 cathes ur pole and brining chalk.

Ya, but its still is more accident prone. I'm just saying.....

bring a towel to wipe your grip tape down and rough it up a little i have a meet today and its raining, cold and extreemly windy

it is harder to jump in the rain, but there are plenty of things that you can do to improve your grip.
1. take a towel and keep grip dry
2. use sticky tape (friction tape works better than athletic tape)
3. turn tape inside out
4. use chalk to keep hands dry
5. butane reacts with the oil on your skin to increase the friction between your hand and the tape

There are so many states that do not want the pole vault to exist at all. Especially for women, ladies, girls! The risk of injury while vaulting in the rain increases exponentially!! If there is an accident and someone gets seriously injured or worse, there are a number of states that would immediately outlaw PV for girls if not for all!! There is no reward for vaulting in these conditions that is worth the risk for the entire community of pole vaulters!!! Simply put ... put the tricks (that's all they are) back in the bag and don't do it!!!! My .02

So Dave, With that being said, why doesn't the common sense rule of "no jumping if it's raining" occur in the pole vault? With everything being done to make this a safe sport why doesn't the rules people just plain say, "if it's raining, no vault". Simple as that. It makes sense doesn't it? I can remember being called a woos a number of times back in my little league coaching days when I would pull my team off the field at the first sign of lightening, which in Minnesota almost always coincides with rain. Wet vaulting is no fun, it's not good to watch, it's not fun to do, but more importantly it's not safe. They are makin' kids wear helmets now a days, why hasn't someone figured out a "no vaultin' in the rain" rule? Bonified question in my opinion, don't you think? Later..........Mike

Because it's hard to define how hard it has to be raining for the event to be unsafe. If it's just sprinkling off and on, it's really not so bad, as long as you keep your grip dry.

Obviously if there is any thunder or lightning the event should NOT be held.

Also you have to remember that some states spend most of their track season in the rain. Those kids tend to learn how to vault safely in the rain. To cancel the pole vault at most of their meets would kill the event pretty quickly.
