planting in a box problems

Unread postby vaultinggoat16 » Mon Feb 07, 2005 11:22 pm

I can plant and jump decent 11-12 range with a box at the place I gt coached but the box at my high school is ALOT shorter and steeper and I am having trouble pushing a flex in it. Sucks to have these great jumps away from school but not at school.Any suggestions would help. I currently grip at armpit I am thinking about raising to under the elbow.

i believe all high schools are reqauired by law to have the same demensions for the box. you may want to check that...

i dont think i have ever heard of this happening. see if you can get a picture up i wanna see this box. otherwise see if its the same maby it just seams different. i know several of the indoor facilities around MI have different boxes but that really dosent affect you after you get used to it.

It sounds like an old 60's box to me. They are illegal now.

I just checked and our box is the old school style it is MUCH smaller then the new dimensions. It seemed alot smaller then the ones I have jumped good in.

Make sure when you jump at your school, you grip a lot lower and on shorter poles.

If you are using an earlier box the sides will be vertical. This will destroy your poles if you are bending them. It has to be replaced!!!!! I broke a bunch of poles on these boxes before they were replaced....and that was a VERY LONG time ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A new box in football country is a trick...I am just tired of making decent jumps everywhere but school.....kinda makes me look like a liar when I jump
12' at a local camp whereas I am doing 7-8 at school. Makes me learn to swing...

You need to approach the head track coach and give him the address to this website. He needs to understand that the school is in violation of the national high school rules book and that they are compromising your and your fellow vaulter safety.
In the meantime, follow Becca's advice jump on a shorter pole and make sure you are making th pit.
