My friend and i tried this, take a long strip of athletic tape and place it 1 foot infront of you take off step (if you take off from 11', put it at 10'). It worked for me!

If you are gripping 12" your take off should be 9'4" out and your sixstride mark should be 40'4". If you are taking 7 lefts then mark 40'4" and run away from the pit three lefts. That is our starting mark. You will not be under if you run properly and do not over stride. You will be able to jump 11'-6" without doing anything but basic fundamentals. Try that and get back to me!

I'm not sure if I would agree that you should be taking off at 9'4". That take off is going to be dependant on you hieght and arm length. The taller you are and the longer arms you have the closer your take off is going to be. The vast majority of girls I coach their take off is between 9' and 9'6" with a 12' grip. However I had one girl that is 6'1" and super long arms (definatly had + ape index Rusty) with a take off at 8'3".

If he is getting into the pit with that grip, then the measurements WILL work. If he is gripping too high then that is a different thread.

Maybe it's the ambiguity created by the internet. I can see that a 9'4" take off is most likely going to be on for most girls and outside by 4" to 12" for a few girls and most boys. That this will be a mark that is not under therfore will "work" and is simple to explain.
I don't mean this to be sarcastic:
Why not tell them to grip their 12'6" pole with thier top hand 6" down (12' grip), hold the pole straight above their head stand right under the top hand so you can drop straight verticle line fropm the top hand through the ball of their take off foot. This gives you a mark that is tailored to thier particular build. Then adjust that take off mark as you perfer to coach (take off on that mark, slightly out side, or slightly under)?

I agree Duplantis and Jeremy Scott wouldnt takeoff both at 9'4 even if they were both gripping 12ft? Just an example.

Probably a dumb question - BUT how can a coach know what the mid mark would be for a vaulter he or she has never seen. If a person has short or long legs would this not affect the stride length and mid point ??? If there is a formula to back up this methode PLEASE fill me in on the details as I would like to know. Thanks
