Help for a new vaulter?

Unread postby Guest » Sat Feb 21, 2004 1:11 am

I was just wondering if anybody can offer their advice...

Last year I joined polevaulting as a freshmen (it was the first year my school even offered it). My highest I jumped was 7'3.

We do not have a polevaulting coach and no veterns to even show us PVers how to do it. Im not even sure of the right technique i should be using. Plus, we do not have an indoor track so we have to wait until spring to vault.

Is there any advice on how i can be successful..Like is there anything i can do by myself at home or any advice would be great. Thanks

I know i may not be good but this is what im happy doing :)

there r some pole vault camps around... if u could find some money u could go to on eof them. they help alot.
also online there are a few sites that talk about ur form and stuff.. i found pvei.com as one of them, it tells u how to do it and ur form adn all. there r some video clips as well that u can compare urself to.
i run, therefore im buff.

ok, in the offseason, running and lifting are always good, but if you can do as much gymnastic stuff as possible! theres plenty of good drills to do if you have any bars around. just at home you can always look at video to see what the proper form looks like, do lots of handstands an chin ups and such, theres a few good drills you can do just on the ground too. If you want any details on the drills/ what else you can be doing, jus send me a PM.
What have you done today to get better?

i dont think its that bad fro pv.. i mean im no expert but i do both as well. unless u mean like long long distacne but i doubt it. i think that distnace makes u stronger and have more endurance, which will make u more consistant with ur run , and faster actually, i kno that my distance team is faster then most of the sprinters with the exception of like 3.
and if ur in hs u prob do multiple events too. so if u run and pv ur gonna need the endurance to be able to do all ur events. i kno one dude who ran like 800 400 and 4x8 and still pv or something like that he won my league for pole vault and his 4x8 won also and got like 8th in the nation.... but ya i dont think it can be all distance, u have to have some speed work but agian if ur in hs ur coach prob makes u do some speed work like 1 or 2 times a week. so ya u should be good.

i would say distance running is bad for the vault during the season, i mean for cross its good so maybe balance it, but i know my man e.j. jackson told me that distance running will not build your twitch fibers or somethin, so like run sprints for the vault, but if you run xc maybe you run distance in track? i dont know youll have to decide that for yourself

lol lets see i run xc in teh fall which makes my sprinting kinda slow but betters my endurance, bball in the winter which def. makes me quicker and still helps my endurance, and pv in the spring so i think im pretty balanced

http://www.advantageathletics.com/ is a great site which shows Bubka drills and gives great examples of good vaults.

http://www.pvei.com/ has lots of great coaching articles as well.
