I actually got over 6' 5 times that day!
I NEVER use a cross bar in practice, only time i ever see one is at meets.
Also, I do a drill where you try to get your feet to touch the pole in the air. And a version of the "Candlestick" yoga position on the mats, to work getting straight when I get my legs up.
