So, does the bottom arm bend the pole or the top arm?
Does it depend on the length of the pole?
I've always trained to have a passive bottom arm, especially since I have very few athletes on 13ft poles of higher, the ones I do have on the longer poles I am coaching them to have an active bottom arm, to push up and to break the elbow at the recoil...
I'm starting to think of the active bottom arm as a passive phase described by Roman in his manifesto,
While experimenting with stick vaulting, I notice I cannot keep my bottom arm straight and still get to verticle, I can get it straight at take off, and get a better angle with it, but I have to bend it, get fiber faced, and the swing from my top hand.
I feel like I am missing something on the role of the bottom arm...
Is there more than one way to skin a cat?

There may be more than one way to skin a cat, but not many "best" ways.
The bottom arm is straight and moving the pole arriving at take-off (on penultimate, top hand at the top of your head,) and then arriving at take-off step the elbow is bent/the arm is "discarded" and you should push UP as hard as you can with both arms.
Does that make any sense?
Forget Roman's 6.40 model. That is not on the table as an option for you. Unlike the basic Petrov model, the 6.40 model is entirely dependent upon athleticism. Unless you can do a hang-to-handstand, it is pretty much out of bounds.
