South didn't go down without a fight, either. Thanks, in large part, to senior Sam Pierson. He won the pole vault with a meet record and personal best height of 15 feet, 6 inches. That's a foot more than what won Class 4A state a year ago.
Pierson also won the 110 high hurdles in 15.98, he finished third in the high jump at 5-7 and placed second in the 300 hurdles (43.96).
"It was a perfect day to vault," Pierson said. "It was cool, there was no wind and I got to vault early. I had a good week of practice and I wanted to break 15 (feet). I knew it was going to be a good day."
Pierson missed on all three tries at 15-9 as he captivated the crowd with his attempts.
Sam Pierson (CO) 15-6
