New crop of pole vaulters aiming for new heights
Talented trio shines at Treasure Valley Team Invitational

The next generation of Idaho high school girls pole vaulters is happening right now.
For four years, Skyview High´s Julene Bailey won everything and pushed the standard ever higher, while everyone else duked it out for second.
Now that Bailey and her four pole-vaulting gold medals and overall, 5A and 4A state-meet records are gone, a handful of Treasure Valley underclassmen have gotten in line to be her heir apparent.
Centennial junior Megan Perner, Borah sophomore Annelise Bertleson and Nampa junior Ashley Rosenbaum haven´t reached Bailey´s level yet, but they´re on the right path.
At the Treasure Valley Team Invitational at Mountain View on Friday, all three cleared 10 feet, 6 inches. The mark was a good 2 feet lower than Bailey´s state-meet record, but clearly these three form the tightest clump of competitors in the event since it was introduced in Idaho in 1997. Perner finished first because of fewer misses at the height.
Borah won the boys competition with 128 points, followed by Mountain View (98) and Eagle (88). On the girls side, Mountain View won with 95, Emmett was second with 91.5, and Nampa finished third with 86.
Bailey´s father, Larren, who coaches Perner, Bertleson and Rosenbaum during the summer and the indoor season in the winter, officiated the pole vault Friday afternoon. He said all three are on the verge of something great.
“It´s just that fine line of believing it,â€Â
