Gering's Bauer hopes clinic will attract vaulting coaches

Meagan Bauer of Gering, now a pole vaulter at Doane College, uses the old Lockwood Corporation warehouse for inside workouts. Bauer will offer a clinic to regional pole vault coaches on Dec. 30.
You might refer to Meagan Bauer's pole vault workouts as "industrial strength."
Bauer, a standout pole vaulter for Gering High School and now at Doane College, walked across the dusty floor, past several vehicles in storage and to the east side of the old Lockwood Corporation warehouse.
Surrounded by iron beams, skylights and cool temperatures, Bauer was ready for a workout on Tuesday but first wanted to talk about an even more important topic, an upcoming clinic she will offer to regional pole vault coaches.
On Friday, Dec. 30, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Gering High School gymnasium Bauer will try to dispel some of the fear coaches might have about trying to teach the sport. The cost is $20.
Bauer holds the Gering High School and Western Conference records of 12 feet 8 inches and 12 feet 6 inches, respectively, the Doane College record of 12-11 ½, and the Great Plains Athletic Conference record of 12 feet 8 inches.
She has attended numerous national pole vault camps and has conducted two camps in Alliance.
Bauer said she would focus on techniques for beginning and advance vaulters, safety, and coaching tips.
She said some coaches are forced into coaching pole vault and are concerned because they feel it might be dangerous.
"I think I can help coaches effectively and safely teach pole vault and not be concerned about the danger," she said.
Some day Bauer said she would like to return to western Nebraska and teach secondary math and coach pole vault, but for the present time she would like to share some of the knowledge she has acquired in becoming one of the top female pole vault competitors in the state and nation.
She would also like to qualilfy for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China, and reach a height of 15 feet during her college career.
She said training at the college level is much different than in high school. She spends the entire first semester working on strength and conditioning and then the second competing and working on technique.
Bauer expects to compete in as many as 22 indoor and outdoor meets in the second semester, the first coming the first weekend in January.
With a personal best vault of 12-11 ½, Bauer knows her sport well and will stress that safety is paramount.
"I think I can stress to coaches that the vault is not dangerous if you do everything right," she said.
Things like pole selection, flex ratings, and how to correct mistakes will be discussed as will the use of helmets.
Bauer said there is not such a thing as a helmet designed specifically for pole vaulting, and many competitors use skater helmets.
Bauer's father, Bill, was philosophical when discussing helmets. He said if the pole vault is done correctly there would not be the need for a helmet, but if it is done wrong then there might need to be that protection.
Bauer said she would have lots of handouts that she's acquired from numerous pole vault clinics she has attended.
"We'll talk a lot about safety, drills and work on Gering's new Faze II pole vaulting simulator," she said. There will be a runway and a vaulting pit set up in the gymnasium.
For more information about the clinic, Bauer can be contacted at (308) 631-2046.
